Good to Great - First Who…Then What

Here’s something to think about it…

In the past, I’ve spoken about having the courage to put people in the right roles and knowing that sometimes you may find that some people are also not a good fit for your organization. In Jim Collins’s book “Good to Great” he discusses a similar concept of which he coined as “First Who…Then What” - one of the key components required to take an organization from good to great. Here’s an excerpt from the book that describes how to think about this:

  • “first get the right people on the bus (and the wrong people off the bus) before you figure out where to drive it. The second key point is the degree of sheer rigor needed in people decisions in order to take a company from good to great…”1

So, my questions to you:

  • Have you determined who needs to get on the bus and who needs to get off the bus?

  • Does your organization follow the First Who…Then What leadership strategy?

Are you ready to dig into building the skills required to level up from Good to Great? I help Organizations inspire confidence back into their team for innovation and growth. I help Organizations design and implement a system that fosters and protects a strong culture where employees are heard and understood from leadership down. In doing so, individual team members can gain confidence to bravely introduce innovative ideas and grow the company. If you are ready to get started, please reach out to chat.
